Numerous news outlets reported that hypodermic needles and other medical waste washed up on the shoreline of Venice Beach, California on the morning of Sunday November 10th, 2019. Lifeguards alerted authorities to the presence of this potentially infectious material just before noon. The beach south of the Venice Beach pier was closed and a cleanup effort was begun. The beach was reopened later that afternoon but LA County lifeguards continued to monitor the beach area and surrounding water for any other dangerous items.
Authorities stated that they were investigating to determine where the medical waste came from and how it ended up on a public beach.
This is not the first incident of hazardous medical waste turning up on a California beach. As recently as, 2015 Dockweiler State Beach was closed due to a sewage spill and release of medical waste from the Hyperion Treatment Plant.
